A Brief History

The first permanent church, built in 1852.

Assumption (Grotto), founded in 1832,     is the second oldest church in Detroit.  

 

It is home to the oldest

Marian Shrine in Michigan.

The present church was designed by
the Aloys Frank Herman
architectural firm and 
dedicated in 1929.

The current church,

built in 1828-1829 in the neo-Gothic style,

is a Michigan State Historic Site 

and listed on

the National Register of Historic Places.
